The Middle Eastern Antiquarian Agency is a consultancy and restoration atelier specializing in calligraphy and book arts of the Islamic world, based in Tbilisi, Georgia. Founded and directed by Islamic manuscripts expert and collector Amir-Yashar Ajami, it was established in 2018 to meet long standing and pressing needs in the world of Islamic manuscript collection, research, and restoration.
Tbilisi, the capital city of the Republic of Georgia and a glittering gem of the old Silk Road, has an ancient and continuous connection with the Islamic world.
It was an independent Arab Muslim emirate in the early Middle Ages. In Georgia’s Golden Age, during the reigns of David the Builder and Queen Tamar the Great, Persian literature and Sufi spirituality were important aspects of the courtly culture of Tbilisi, and later, the city always participated in the Persianate cultural world. Eastern Georgians, many from Tbilisi, very often held high positions of power and influence in Safavid, Zand, and Qajar Iran. Tbilisi has always been a cosmopolitan town where many cultures and religions meet. Mr Ajami fell in love with Tbilisi at first sight, and realised that due to its history and spirit, and given its welcoming openness to visitors, it would be a perfect place to establish this agency
